Emily and her daughter, Lorelai constantly bickered on Gilmore Girls. But which of their arguments are truly memorable?

The Gilmore Girls alum, Kelly Bishop (Emily Gilmore) was seen channeling a feisty matchmaker, Benedetta in season 4 of Amy Sherman-Palladino's, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Whilst Bishop's Benedetta is a new TV character, she's best remembered as the gracious, posh, and argumentative mother of Lorelai Gilmore.

Emily and Lorelai's arguments erupted in Gilmore Girls' first season in 2000 and they continued to bicker in 2007's final season, and unsurprisingly in 2016's Netflix revival - A Year in the Life. The two women were wildly different from one another, in that, Emily cherished traditions, and Lorelai's freewheeling spirit couldn't care less about rules or some such. Their relationship drew a stark contrast to Lorelai and Rory's loving bond. The differences in Emily and Lorelai's personalities combined with the Gilmore brand of repartee led to several hilarious arguments that get a bunch of laughs from the show's millennial and Gen Z fans.

In this memorable scene from "Cinnamon's Wake," Emily teaches her daughter a thing or two about the sanctity of dinner conversations. It's a typical Friday night and the Gilmore women are having dinner without Richard who's away on business in Germany.

Lorelai, who can't stop cracking jokes at her father's expense gets a befitting reply disguised as a joke from her mother. When Emily says she and Richard once stayed in Munich with an actual Nazi named Rudolph Gottfried, Lorelai begins to chastise her. Very quickly, Emily adds she was joking and Lorelai is unable to retort. From this memorable conversation, fans learn that dark humor is certainly not Lorelai's cup of tea, and Emily knows how to defend her principled husband and his work.

The fact that Emily and her daughter, Lorelai don't see eye to eye on things is apparent in the pilot episode, thanks to this conversation from the very first Friday night dinner.

Emily raises her glass in a toast to Rory, and Lorelai looks like she's itching to banter with her mother. Lorelai thinks she's being funny equating education and family to pie. No one understands it's a joke until Lorelai herself says it is one. She gets an "Ah!" from her mother and a deadpan reaction from Richard. This banter is one of the very best because, in that brief moment, Emily teaches Gilmore Girls viewers how to get through a family gathering. She ignores her daughter because she knows the moment belongs to Rory.

One of Emily Gilmore's shadiest burns in Gilmore Girls lies in "The Lorelais' First Day at Chilton" wherein viewers witness her witty put-down of Lorelai's clothing choice.

Lorelai's fuzzy alarm clock causes her to oversleep on Rory's first day at Chilton. She has no time to pick up dry cleaning and therefore no choice but to put on a combination of cutoff shorts, a pink t-shirt, and surprisingly, cowboy boots. Lorelai isn't very pleased to see Emily already at the headmaster's office and is in a fix when she's asked to remove her coat and be seated. Emily is appalled to see Lorelai dressed rather inappropriately and it's hilarious how tactfully she renders her completely speechless in front of everybody.

The opening scene of "Haunted Leg" begins on an uncomfortable but humorous note for the mother-daughter duo. Lorelai and Emily begin exchanging curt pleasantries. To get the conversation started, Rory decides to talk about her mother's business which is going well but faces challenges from time to time.

When Lorelai says she's dealing with a mouse problem at the Inn, Emily immediately asks if her place is unclean. This conversation gets the ball rolling, and the next thing fans know, Emily and Lorelai are arguing about a woman named Shauna Christy. The dialogue establishes Lorelai and Emily keep getting more and more creative in their conversations. It is this creativity that makes the show's Friday night dinners an unending source of entertainment for fans.

In this glorious Gilmore Girls season 1 joke everyone completely missed, Emily makes a subtle crack about her daughter's lifestyle and refuses to believe that a funeral was held for her neighbor's deceased pet.

Whilst the entire Stars Hollow shares Babette and Morey's loss, Emily cannot fathom why her daughter skipped an unknown relative's funeral to be with her immediate neighbor. She calls Lorelai late at night to give her grief and uses odd remarks to convey she's upset. Lorelai wants to hang up and free herself from her mother's questioning, but knowing the mother-daughter dynamic, fans know that Emily won't give in without expressing derision one last time. Whilst Emily steals the show with the whole "raccoon's wedding" remark, the conversation serves to point out the subtle differences between the two, and that's exactly what makes it unforgettable.

In "The Reigning Lorelai," When Emily talks about her oldest friend, Sweetie aka Melinda Nelson passing away, Lorelai manages a "why?" in place of condolence. While Rory immediately expresses her sympathies, her mother wants to know how Melinda got the nickname, Sweetie.

Emily makes up a false story about how Melinda as a child walked miles in the snow, stumbled into a candy store where the owner took pity on her, and promptly offered a job to her father. Fans are glad Emily gave a befitting reply to Lorelai who looked for amusing tales about a deceased person. It's conversations like these that remind viewers why Emily is Gilmore Girls' main character. Her quick-fired repartee and the ability to pull off this dinner without letting her daughter make all kinds of commotion are a joy to watch.

In season 4's "Scene in a Mall, "Emily goes shopping at full-throttle, and Lorelai and Rory fail to keep pace with her. She asks Lorelai to watch her step as the latter inadvertently collides with her.

Emily is particularly aggressive in the episode because she's upset about the state of her marriage and feels her contribution isn't being valued enough by Richard. The collision is physical comedy gold and Lorelai's 'brake light' comparison elevates the comedy in the scene.

Season 2's "There's the Rub" features Emily and her daughter getting massages and body treatments at a health spa. Lorelai makes fans laugh out loud by saying her mother looks like a landlady in a white robe.

Whilst Lorelai has taken an off day, her compulsive urge to crack jokes never rests. In a rare moment, such as thing one, Loralai knows the value of a short joke and Emily knows how to ignore her and have fun.
